The municipality of Itaparica is located in the Recôncavo Baiano region and is part of the Salvador Metropolitan Region (RMS). In the Tupi language, the expression “Itaparica” means “stone fence”.

The Island, as it is affectionately called by residents, vacationers and visitors, was discovered on November 1, 1501 by the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci, along with the Bay of All Saints. The Island was emancipated from Salvador on August 8, 1833 and elevated to city status on July 30, 1962. Later, the municipality was split into two: Itaparica and Vera Cruz.

Itaparica’s independence occurred on January 7, 1823. Historical records of its total area are 116 km2. It is bordered to the North and East by the Atlantic Ocean, to the South by the Municipality of Vera Cruz and to the West by the Municipality of Salinas da Margarida.

Itaparica has an extraordinary potential for natural resources, containing places of great natural beauty, in addition to the gifts of the land, such as its mineral water, with hypothermal characteristics, the most representative of which is the Fonte da Bica, famous for its “fine water that turns old women into girls”. It was built in 1842 and officially became a Hydromineral Resort in 1937, the only one in the country by the sea. The water has undeniable medicinal properties in its composition.

Cultural Heritage can be represented by cultural and artistic manifestations that value the city’s civic events, such as: Festa de Sete de Janeiro and Lavagem do Beco.
