Salvador gains museum about the history of Carnival in the heart of the city

Sumário

It was with the carnival classic “Chame gente” that the master of the Bahian guitar, Armandinho, welcomed, this Monday, the 5th, during the inauguration of the Casa do Carnaval, located next to the Cathedral Basilica of São Salvador, between Terreiro de Jesus and Praça da Sé, in Pelourinho. In sync with Armandinho’s chords, the opening show of the space, featured the performance of cultural groups that participated and keep the history of the Folia de Momo alive, such as the Mascarados de Maragojipe and the afoxé Filhos de Gandhi.

The ceremony was also attended by guests and authorities such as Mayor ACM Neto. Upon entering the building that houses the museum, visitors will have access to four floors equipped with images, writings and sounds that tell the story of the festival. According to the curator of the space, Gringo Cardia, the collection contemplates the social transformation of the festival. “The journey begins in the time of the Empire, when Carnival was an event for the aristocracy, until its popularization,” he explains. For the curator, Gringo, the dance floor represents the fun provided by the festival. “And after that, visitors will be able to enjoy a view of the Baía de Todos-os-Santos,” he guarantees.

Service

The museum will be closed during Carnival. The space will reopen on February 15th for free scheduled visits by calling (71) 3324-6760. In March, access will be open to the general public. Admission costs R$30 (full price) and R$15 (half price).
